Web Design: Interactive Cognition Lab

For the Interactive Cognition Lab, the outdated website needed to be updated such that the information architecture made the site easier to update and feature new content appropriately. Below are a few examples of the before and after pictures:

ICL Home | People | Projects | Publications

Old ICL Home
Revamped ICL Home

ICL's outdated site was rarely updated by the lab members as its content was over 3 years old and it was not structured to accommodate new content about the lab's future projects. The site's amateur look did not do the lab's rich intellectual environment justice.

Promoting better branding for the lab with a simple yet powerful ICL logo as well as placing the lab title front and center with the tag line "Coordinating Mind and Enviroment" strengthened the lab's appeal to visitors. The highly visual background images on this home page showcased the lab's location in San Diego, CA and its true beauty.

Old People
Revamped People

ICL's old People page did not feature enough contact information about each lab member. It suffered from several layout issues and did not indicate what position each person had in the lab which made it difficult for lab visitors to know who to contact. Excessively plain the ICL's people page did not highlight the fact that the lab's member were fun and interesting people.

Placing each lab member's picture in an LCD monitor made the People page fun for visitors and the lab's members. Contact information for each person was cleanly displayed underneath their names. Plenty of whitespace coupled with proper grouping according to lab position solved the previous layout issues.

Old Projects
Revamped Projects

Restricted by an unaccomodating information architecture, the previous Project section was rarely updated and poorly integrated with the rest of the site as it contained mostly links to separate project sites. It failed to hold the key documents and image galleries that were essential for holding the necessary information about each project.

Tighly integrating the lab's projects into the lab website was accomplished by making subsites for each project where the key documents and image galleries could easily be stored. Connected to the lab's Intranet the new Project section was designed to be both scaleable and easy to update.

Old Publications
Revamped Publications

Mistakenly organized and displayed like a bibliography, the lab's previous Publications page was not designed for the web.

Cleanly laid out the new Publications page only displayed the relevant information.
