User Interviews

The first step in the redesign of the camera phone was to elicit from teenagers how they used and what they thought about their current cell phones and digital cameras. Additionally, we wanted to find out what other current electronic devices they use (computers, mp3 player, etc) in order to gain an understanding of what is popular and used a lot. Following this, we attempted to gain insight into what kinds of activities they participate in so that we could support their needs. Using this, we divided our interviews into three sections, phone usage, electronics usage, and activities. Below you will find the summary of this data.

Documents: Interviews Questions (doc)

Phone Usage
Mainly for talking with friends and family
When bored, play games
Don’t text message because it costs money, but international students use it as it’s cheaper than a phone call
Confiscated if seen by teachers during class
Girl’s pants are too tight for phones to fit well into
Want video recording capability
Want phones to be more of an extension of themselves and their personality
Older teens wish phones had a good MP3 player, camera, and PDA all in one so they could carry around only one thing
Younger teens find the look of the phone very important (young, cool)

Electronics Usage
Use Instant Messaging on computers everyday
CD players, MP3 players, minidisc players, digital cameras

Activities

Use of a flap or not. Flaps enable privacy and protect the screen
